30.06.2023 – Boysen Group relies on the world's most sustainable stainless steel

With Circle Green, Boysen is taking on a pioneering role on the road to a low-emission automotive industry.

Altensteig. The Boysen Group is one of the world's first automotive suppliers to manufacture its products from sustainable stainless steel - and thus also decisively optimises the CO2 balance sheet of its customers. The Altensteig-based company is setting a new benchmark on the road to green production together with Outokumpu, the global market leader in the stainless steel industry, and thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe.

Circle Green is the most sustainable stainless steel in the world, according to Outokumpu, with a CO2 footprint up to 92 per cent lower than the industry average. No competitor achieves similarly low values in stainless steel production. The decisive factors here are the high proportion of recycled material of over 90 per cent, the sustainable ferrochrome sourced from the company's own mine and the very high proportion of climate-friendly energy at 75 per cent.

As part of the cooperation, the Finnish steel producer delivers the material to thyssenkrupp. There, the experts take over the processing of the master coil into slit strip and the just-in-time delivery to Boysen. "By combining the strengths and expertise of our three companies, this partnership represents a milestone on the road to a low-emission automotive industry ," says Niklas Wass, Executive Vice President, Stainless Europe at Outokumpu. "Supply and service around reduced-emission metal products are key services for our company to support our customers and partners in developing sustainable solutions," adds Marcus Wöhl, CEO of thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe.

By purchasing and using decarbonised stainless steel, the Boysen Group, which specialises in premium exhaust systems, is setting an example for more sustainable supply chains in the automotive industry. The use of Circle Green enables enormous savings potential in CO2 emissions and thus makes an active contribution to climate protection.

"For us as developers and manufacturers of systems and components that ensure a decisive reduction in pollutant and noise emissions in our customers' vehicles, environmental protection is an essential part of our business. We are proud to have found two strategic partners to further advance the important topic of sustainability and CO2 neutrality in the supply chain. True to our motto - no future without change," says Rolf Geisel, CEO of the Boysen Group, who recognised the signs of the times early on: "Sustainability was our guiding theme long before it became a buzzword. As early as 2011, we realised our vision of a CO2 -optimised factory in Altensteig and since then we have relied on the use of state-of-the-art energy technology such as ice storage, geothermal energy or natural cooling at our locations. With our PV systems at all locations, we currently produce over 20 million kilowatt hours of green electricity per year, which corresponds to an annual CO2 saving of around 15,000 tonnes."

In the course of its technological transformation, the Boysen Group has also significantly expanded its product portfolio in recent years. Geisel recently announced to its employees that it had won its second major contract for the production of battery housings for electric vehicles. Other new product groups include structural components, hydrogen tank systems, operating elements and electronic components. Additional building blocks of Boysen's future strategy are the production of energy storage systems (redox flow battery systems) and fuel cells as well as the energy-saving production of hydrogen.
